Emma by Jane Austen
18 April – 10 May, 2009
Adapted by Michael Fry
Directed by Lisa Warrington
Starring Tim Foley, Anya Tate-Manning, Patrick Davies, Julia Croft & Mel Dodge
Money, manners, marriage and mobility (in the form of social advancement)—this is what a Jane Austen novel is about.
Unique among Austen's genteel leading ladies, however, is the fact that Emma Woodhouse is seriously flawed. A lively young lady, from a well-to-do household, Emma has a decidedly high opinion of herself. Fancying herself as a matchmaker, she comically and shamelessly meddles in the lives of neighbors and friends, usually spoiling their chances at romance rather than improving them.
Yet, despite her faults Emma has an undeniable charm and love does find a way.
In this fresh, sparkling theatrical adaptation, Michael Fry has dramatised this time-honored romance in a way “Jane Austen herself would surely applaud!” And so will you.
