Lullaby Jock
5–10 February 2008
PERFORMANCE SPACE: THE STUDIO
The first collaborative production of the 2008 season - for six performances only on the Studio stage of the Fortune.
A docu-drama not to be missed.
Generations go to war and return forever changed. This is Jock’s story.
WWII has left Jock quietly scarred – so while the laughs keep coming he is slowly fading inside. He is the life of the party, the joker, the loveable rogue drinking to quell the noise inside. This collection of true stories blends an incredibly intimate and fantastical tale of a father, a husband, a teacher, a soldier.
Written and performed by Centrepoint Theatre’s artistic director, Simon Ferry and youngest son of the late Jock Ferry, Simon does this piece with humour, passion and class.
Simon, a graduate of Toi Whakaari, began life as an actor in 1990. He has appeared on stages around NZ as well as internationally, notably earning various nominations and awards for his efforts in developing new NZ works. Simon is an established classical actor and was recently selected as an international artist in residence at Shakespeare’s Globe Centre in London.
Originally conceived and performed as a 20 minute monologue, Simon has teamed up with Wellington theatre-maker Tim Spite to bring this story to life. Simon plays 20 characters in this humorous and poignant family piece. “Warfare affects us all, it affected our forebears and it helped shape who we are as a country and as individuals. This is a story about my dad, but also about every generation that has been.”
So why should you see it? It is about us, New Zealanders, who we are, how we became that and the significance of that on a world stage. This is the story of Jock Ferry, but some of it may be familiar.
