“Come not between a dragon and his wrath” King Lear 1.1
Widely regarded as William Shakespeare's greatest tragedy and crowning artistic achievement, King Lear is a tour de force for the Fortune Theatre. The play is considered to be the finest example of tragic lyricism in the English language and takes its story from a 12th century folk tale based on spoken stories which originated in the Middle Ages.
King Lear ably positions itself for a modern day audience who question the meaning of the physical and moral carnage we face daily on the television and in the newspapers. The profound brutality of this tale forces us to wonder as Kent does ‘Is this the promised end?' Beautiful and bare this play presents the futility of the human condition in all its naked horror. Not to be missed, the Fortune Theatre and the Bacchanals have joined forces to present a national triumph which will open in Wellington at Te Wheae Theatre.
