Dunedin Playback Theatre Company

Playback Theatre

Playback is a theatre of storytelling. Audience members are invited to share relevant life experiences after which a team of actors and musicians improvises a dramatic performance to reflect and magnify the essential meaning. The unrehearsed, improvised nature of the performance adds life and significance to seemingly ordinary occurrences and can appear magical. A performance team usually consists of a conductor, 4 actors and 1 or 2 musicians. By enabling the sharing of individual and collective stories connections are made which enliven and enrich our experience of life and strengthen communities.

Who is Playback for?

Playback can be used by people of all ages and for many types of events. It is more than just entertainment. Playback can be used to explore themes and issues, assist transitions or celebrate accomplishments. It can educate, build trust, empower and inspire.

A Playback performance could enhance any of the following:-
Seminars, training events, festivals, fundraisers, conferences, parties, school functions, birthdays and anniversaries, reunions and holiday programs. Playback could be used on marae, by hospitals and rest homes, community and church groups.

Playback can add to almost any group situation where people are gathered together with a common purpose and a shared focus. It provides a structure and ritual that enables people to tell personal stories easily and then see them played back.

History and Aims

Playback theatre was developed by Jonathan Fox in 1975 in New York and since then has spread around the world. The Dunedin Playback Theatre Company was founded in 1995 and has performed in a wide range of situations. Our company is a member of the International Playback Theatre Network (IPTN). We aim to build connections through the sharing of stories.

A contract performance includes

• A performance developed from themes and issues relevant to your event
• A 1-1.5 hour performance involving a conductor, 3 to 4 actors and 1 or 2 musicians.
• Fees are tailored to your performance needs and concessions may be available for community groups
